Locations and Map Fields in the App

Many survey forms ask you where you were, either by marking a location on a map or by choosing an existing site. This page explains how each kind of map question works in the app.

Marking a Location#

Some questions ask you to mark a point on a map. In the form, they show No location set or the coordinates you've chosen.

  1. Tap the question. A map opens, titled with the question's name.
  2. Set the location in one of these ways:
    • Tap the arrow button at the bottom left of the map to use your phone's GPS location.
    • Tap the map where you were.
    • Type coordinates into the box at the top, either as latitude and longitude (for example 51.4545, -2.5879) or as a 10-digit Ordnance Survey grid reference.
  3. Use the GPS / NGR buttons beside the box to switch between latitude/longitude and grid references. The pin button at the bottom left moves the map back to the location you've chosen.
  4. Tap Done to save the location, or Cancel to leave it as it was.

The first time you do this, the app asks for permission to use your location, first with its own message (Cartographer would like to access your location) and then with your phone's own prompt. Allow both if you want to use GPS. If the app says Could not determine your location, check that location services are switched on for Cartographer in your phone's settings, and give the GPS a moment to get a fix outdoors.

GPS works without a mobile signal, but the background map may be blank in areas you haven't viewed before unless your workspace has offline maps (see Installing a Project on Your Device).

Choosing a Site or Other Feature#

Some questions ask you to choose an existing site, such as a Riverfly sampling site or a Wessex Water invertebrate site. The sites shown come from the project data downloaded when you installed the project, so they work offline.

  1. Tap the question to open the map.
  2. Find your site:
    • Zoom in. Sites appear on the map once you're zoomed in far enough.
    • Or type part of the site's name into the Search or enter a grid reference box. Sites that don't match fade out.
    • Or type a grid reference or latitude and longitude to move the map there.
    • Or tap the arrow button at the bottom left of the map to move it to your phone's location.
  3. Tap the site on the map. Its details, such as its name and river, appear in a table below the map. Check they're right.
  4. Tap Done to save your choice, or Cancel to leave it as it was.

Some forms also offer a searchable list under the map. Tap it and start typing to pick the site by name instead.

If the Site Isn't There#

  • If you see The options for this field have not been downloaded to this device yet, the app hasn't finished downloading the project's sites. Go online and let the download finish (see Checking Uploads and Sync Status).
  • If the site was added recently, your device may not have it yet. Switch off Work Offline on wifi and pull down on the survey list to refresh.
  • If the site really doesn't exist, ask your project coordinator to add it on the web site.

Lines and Areas#

Some forms on the web site ask you to draw a line or an area. These questions aren't available in the app yet; you'll see a message saying so. Fill them in later on the web site.
