Signing In to the App

You sign in to the Cartographer app with the same account you use on the Cartographer web site. If you don't have an account yet, see Getting an Account.

You need an internet connection to sign in. Once you're signed in, the app keeps you signed in, even when you're working offline.

Signing In#

  1. Open the Cartographer app. You'll see the Cartographer logo and a single Sign In button.
  2. Tap Sign In. The first time you do this on an iPhone or iPad, your phone will ask you if it’s ok to use auth.cartographer.io to Sign In. Tap Continue. The app will open a Cartographer sign-in page in a browser window inside the app.
  3. Enter your email address and tap Continue.
  4. Enter your password and tap Sign In. If you've forgotten your password, tap Forgot Password.
  5. If you've set up multi-factor authentication, enter the six-digit code from your authenticator app or email and tap Verify (see Setting Up and Removing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)).
  6. The browser window closes and you arrive at the app's home screen, titled Cartographer. See Getting Around the App for a tour.

Every page of the browser sign-in has a Cancel and Go Offline link, which closes the browser window without signing in.

ℹ️
If you've already signed in to the Cartographer web site in your device’s web browser, the app may sign you in straight away without asking for your password.

If Sign-In Doesn't Work#

The app shows a message under the Sign In button if something goes wrong:

  • Sign-in was cancelled. — the browser window was closed before you finished. Tap Sign In to try again.
  • Sign-in was rejected or Sign-in response failed a security check — try again. If it keeps happening, check your phone's date and time are set automatically (clock drift between your device and our servers is one possible cause of failures), and Contact Us if you still can’t get in.

If the screen says Checking app version... for a long time, it’s possible you have poor mobile signal. Move somewhere with wifi or better signal.

Upgrading from an Older Version of the App#

Older versions of the app had their own email and password form. When you upgrade, you'll usually stay signed in. If you haven't used the app for a while, you'll be asked to sign in once using the new browser sign-in page. Any surveys you recorded with the old version stay on your device.

Being Asked to Sign In Again#

From time to time, the app may show a screen saying It's been a while since we saw you last. Please sign in again as …. This usually happens when you switch off Work Offline after a long time away.

  • Tap Sign In to sign in again and carry on uploading and downloading.
  • Tap Cancel and Go Offline if you have no mobile signal or don't want to sign in right now. Your surveys stay on the device, and the app switches to Work Offline until you're ready.

If you signed in to a different account in your browser, the app may show a screen saying the device and the browser are signed in as different people. Nothing has been deleted. Choose Sign In as … to carry on as the account the app was using, or Switch to … to change account. See Accounts and Signing Out for more about using several accounts.

Choosing Different Servers#

At the bottom left of the sign-in screen is a small server icon. It lets our support team connect the app to alternative servers for testing and preview purposes. Please leave it alone unless a member of the Cartographer team asks you to change it. If the app is connected to anything other than the normal servers, the server's name appears next to the icon.
