Getting Around the App

The app has only a handful of screens. This page is a quick tour of them, so you know where things are. The other mobile help pages explain each job in detail.

The Home Screen#

The home screen, titled Cartographer, lists your workspaces and the projects in each one. Projects you haven't installed yet are in grey with a cloud icon; installed projects are in normal text with an arrow, and show a spinner while they're downloading (see Installing a Project on Your Device). Tap a project to open it.

On this screen you'll also find:

  • Settings, at the top right.
  • The status line just under the title bar, which says what the app is doing: Online, Downloading…, Working offline and so on (see Checking Uploads and Sync Status).
  • The Work Offline switch at the bottom, with a line above it whenever surveys are waiting to upload (see Working Offline).

Pull down on the list to refresh it. Swipe left on an installed project to Remove it from your device.

The Project Screen#

Tap a project and you'll see a screen titled with the project's name, listing the kinds of survey you can record in it, for example Riverfly Surveys. Only survey forms the app supports are listed; some forms are only available on the web site.

If the project's data hasn't been updated for a day or more, a yellow Data May Be Out Of Date banner appears here and on the survey list.

The Survey List#

Tap a kind of survey to see the surveys recorded so far, newest first. A search box and a filter row sit at the top, and Add at the top right starts a new survey. Tap a survey to open it, or swipe it to copy or delete it. See Browsing Surveys in the App for what the icons mean.

The Survey Form#

Opening a survey, or tapping Add, shows the survey form. Cancel and Done are at the top. Longer forms are split into pages, with the page title and arrows in a strip under the title bar. See Recording a Survey in the App and Tips on Completing Forms in the App.

Settings#

Tap Settings at the top right of the home or project screen. It's arranged in sections:

  • App Status: who you're signed in as, Uploads (what's waiting to go to our servers), and About (the app's version).
  • Working Offline: the Work Offline switch, and Offline Maps if your workspace has them.
  • Troubleshooting: Help, which opens this web site in your browser, and Export Backup File (see How to Export a Backup File from the App).
  • Account: Accounts, for switching between accounts on a shared device, and Sign Out (see Accounts and Signing Out).

Going Back#

The back arrow at the top left takes you to the previous screen. If you close the app and reopen it, you return to where you were.
