How to Export a Backup File from the App

If you report a problem, our support team may ask you to send a backup file from the app. It shows us what happened, and it lets us recover surveys that couldn't be uploaded.

Exporting a Backup#

  1. On the home screen, tap Settings at the top right.
  2. In the Troubleshooting section, tap Export Backup File.
  3. Choose the type of backup our support team asked for. If they didn't say, choose Everything (recommended, large).
  4. Wait while the app prepares the file. This can take a while if you have lots of photos.
  5. Your phone's share menu opens. Send the file to us by email, or save it to Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive and send us a link.

Types of Backup#

OptionWhat it contains
Everything (recommended, large)All your app data, including surveys and photos. The most useful, but can be a large file
Everything, no attachments (medium)All your app data except photos
Database (small)The app's database on its own
Survey Backups (small)A copy of every survey you've recorded on this device, kept even after signing out
Attachments (large)Just your photos, with details of which survey each belongs to
Logs (medium)The app's activity logs, which help us diagnose problems

Large files may be too big to email. If so, use a file-sharing service instead.

Exporting a Backup for Another Account#

If more than one account has used the app on your device, you can export a backup for each:

  1. Go to Settings → Accounts.
  2. Swipe on the account and tap Export.

If you can't sign in at all, tap the people icon at the bottom right of the sign-in screen, then swipe right on the account to export its backup.

The backup contains your survey data and photos, so only send it to the Cartographer support team.
