The app uploads your surveys and photos by itself whenever it's open and online. If our servers reject one, a line appears above the Work Offline switch saying, for example, 1 survey failed to upload, with Tap to retry or discard underneath. Tap it to go to the Uploads screen. The item appears under Failed on the Uploads screen (Settings → Uploads). See Checking Uploads and Sync Status for how uploads normally work.
First, Is It Really a Failure?#
- Waiting to upload… isn't a failure. The app is between attempts, or waiting for mobile signal. Keep it open on wifi.
- Losing mobile signal partway through an upload isn't a failure either. The app tries again by itself.
- A survey's photos are uploaded after the survey, one by one, so a survey can show as uploaded while its photos are still waiting.
What to Do#
- Open the Uploads screen and tap the failed item. The screen shows the survey, when the upload was queued, and a short reason under Last error, for example Permission denied.
- Tap Retry, ideally on wifi. Many failures are temporary.
- If it fails again, tap Open Survey and check the survey:
- If the form shows red errors, fix them and tap Done. The app queues a fresh upload.
- If the survey's status was changed on the web site, for example approved, our servers won't accept changes to it. Ask your project coordinator to set it back to Draft, then retry.
- If the survey says it was deleted or moved on the server, see A Survey Says It Was Deleted or Moved on the Server.
- If the failed item is a photo, retry it on wifi. Very large files can take several attempts on a slow connection.
- If it still fails, export a backup file (see How to Export a Backup File from the App) and contact us (see Contact Us) with the error message shown on the upload's screen. The backup contains your survey, so we can recover it.
Discarding an Upload#
Discard gives up on sending that version. The survey stays on your device, but our servers won't receive the change. Only discard an upload if you're sure the change isn't needed, or our support team asks you to.
Signed Out or Switched Account?#
Uploads belong to the account that recorded them. If you signed out or switched to another account, they wait on the device and resume when that account signs back in (see Accounts and Signing Out).
